Dublin based The Sick and Indigent Song Club began as an unplanned collaboration between ex-punk/alt-country stalwart Gary Fitzpatrick (The Great Western Squares) and Scottish chanteuse and ukulele hero Angie McLaughlin. The band expanded as Shane McGrath, Christian Volkmann, Gerry Fitzpatrick, and Sheila Sullivan came on board.
They celebrate their 20th anniversary in July 2024.
They play old time music dipping into a diverse range of styles including blues, country, folk, sea shanties, old timey. country gospel, americana and bluegrass. Playing a broad range of instruments the Sick and Indigent Song Club create the easy ambience of old-time recordings.
They have released three albums of original songs in the folk/antique pop idiom, the Inistioge Folly (2007) and Punch Drunk (2009) and, while retaining their Monday night residency, a legendary hooley every week upstairs at the Ha’penny Bridge Inn that ran for 6 years.
Their third album Shinbone Alley (2017) is a collection of sea songs and shanties.
They have toured Europe, Asia and the US and played regularly at festivals both in Ireland and abroad.
They remain, 20 years later, a collective of great friends who still love to get together and play.
Coming from a broad range of musical styles, the musicians in The Sick and Indigent Song Club seems to revel in the freedom of crossing genres, reinterpreting and reintroducing lost classics whilst simultaneously showcasing their own songs to a new audience.
